Physical vs Office Visit
Understanding the difference helps you know what to expect, including how your visit may be billed. Here is a simple breakdown.
Annual Physical
A wellness exam for patients who feel well and have no specific complaints. It is a head-to-toe review of your overall health.
- Complete physical examination
- Review and update of immunizations
- Age-appropriate screenings
- Guidance on diet, exercise, and prevention
Office Visit
A focused visit to address a new or ongoing medical concern. The exam centers on the reason for your visit.
- New symptoms or concerns
- Follow-up on chronic conditions (diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol)
- Medication adjustments or refills
- Lab orders, procedures, or referrals
When both happen in one appointment
Sometimes you come in for a physical and also want to discuss a separate problem, for example, a new symptom or a chronic condition that needs attention. When that happens, your appointment includes both a preventive physical and a problem-based office visit.
Because additional work, examination, and documentation are involved, a combined visit is billed differently than a physical alone.
