What Is the MoCA?
The Montreal Cognitive Assessment is one of the most widely used and validated brief tools for detecting early changes in memory, attention, language, and executive function. It takes about fifteen minutes, is performed right in our office on paper or digitally, and is scored by a certified rater, which matters: proper administration and scoring are what make the result meaningful.
Certification is not automatic. The MoCA’s copyright holder requires formal training and a certification process before a clinician may administer the test, so a certified rater has been trained on the instrument itself rather than adapting a general bedside memory screen. That is what keeps a score comparable year to year, and comparable to the published research.
Who Should Consider Cognitive Testing
- Adults noticing new forgetfulness, word finding difficulty, or trouble with familiar tasks
- Family members concerned about changes in a loved one’s memory or judgment
- Patients with conditions that can affect cognition, including thyroid disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, sleep disorders, and depression
- Anyone who wants a documented baseline to compare against in future years
Because we are your primary care team, an abnormal result is never a dead end: we evaluate for reversible causes with targeted lab work, review medications that can cloud thinking, and coordinate referral to neurology when specialized evaluation is appropriate.
Schedule a Memory Evaluation
Cognitive testing is quick, painless, and often deeply reassuring. If you or someone you love has questions about memory, book a visit at our Rockville, Gaithersburg, or Columbia/Elkridge office and ask for a cognitive assessment.
