Same Day Clearance, Sent Directly to Your Surgeon
Our offices are equipped to finish most pre-operative work-ups in a single visit. We have an on site lab and digital EKG, so bloodwork and cardiac tracing are done during your appointment rather than scheduled elsewhere and waited on for days.
When your evaluation is straightforward and no further testing is needed, we complete the clearance and transmit it electronically to the requesting surgeon the same day. If something does need further work-up, we tell you immediately what it is and arrange it without delay, rather than leaving you and your surgical team waiting.
What a Pre-Operative Evaluation Includes
The evaluation is tailored to your health history and to the type of anesthesia and procedure planned, and typically includes:
- A focused history and physical examination, with attention to cardiac and pulmonary risk
- A full review of your medications, including blood thinners, diabetes medications, and supplements that may need to be held before surgery
- Laboratory testing drawn on site when indicated
- An EKG when indicated by your age, history, or the planned procedure
- An assessment of surgical and anesthetic risk using accepted clinical criteria
- A written clearance letter addressed to your surgeon, with clear peri-operative recommendations
Who Needs Medical Clearance Before Surgery
Surgeons and anesthesiologists commonly request clearance for patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, asthma or COPD, kidney disease, obstructive sleep apnea, or a history of blood clots, and for most adults over 50 undergoing a procedure with general anesthesia.
Clearance is also frequently requested before orthopedic joint replacement, elective abdominal surgery, cataract and other ophthalmic procedures, dental procedures under sedation, and cosmetic surgery.
Bring the request form or contact details from your surgeon’s office and the planned surgery date, and we will work to your timeline. Same week appointments are usually available at all three Maryland locations.
