Hypothyroidism & Hyperthyroidism Treatment in Rockville, Gaithersburg & Columbia, MD

The thyroid is a small gland with an outsized influence: it sets the pace for your metabolism, energy, weight, mood, and heart rate. When it produces too little hormone (hypothyroidism) or too much (hyperthyroidism), the effects touch nearly every system in the body. Our internal medicine physicians diagnose and manage both conditions with careful lab monitoring and treatment adjusted to you, not just to a number.

Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)

An underactive thyroid is common, particularly in women and with increasing age. Symptoms develop gradually and are easy to attribute to something else:

  • Fatigue and sluggishness
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Feeling cold when others are comfortable
  • Dry skin, thinning hair, and brittle nails
  • Constipation
  • Low mood or difficulty concentrating

Diagnosis is made with a simple blood test performed in our on site lab. Treatment is thyroid hormone replacement, with periodic lab checks to keep your dose precisely where your body needs it.

Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)

An overactive thyroid accelerates the body: rapid or irregular heartbeat, unintentional weight loss, heat intolerance, tremor, anxiety, and disturbed sleep. Because untreated hyperthyroidism strains the heart and bones, timely diagnosis matters. We evaluate with targeted lab work, manage medication therapy, and coordinate with endocrinology when specialized treatment such as radioactive iodine is being considered.

Some thyroid conditions shift over time. In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, inflammation of the thyroid gland tissue can cause an initial phase of excess hormone release followed by an underactive thyroid. It sometimes presents as months of unexplained fatigue or body aches without a clear cause, which is why thyroid testing is part of our comprehensive evaluation of fatigue.

Ongoing Thyroid Care

Thyroid conditions are managed, not simply diagnosed. Doses drift, life stages change requirements, and symptoms deserve rechecking even when labs look stable. As your primary care team, we monitor your thyroid alongside the rest of your health, so treatment for one condition never works against another. Schedule an evaluation if the symptoms above sound familiar, or if it has been more than a year since your last thyroid check on treatment.
